Recovering after a Massachusetts Wrong-Way Accident

Massachusetts drivers are required to drive in a safe manner and use sound judgment when on the road. For the most part, motorists do a good job when it comes to staying safe. However, each year, over 350 people are killed in Massachusetts car accidents, and thousands more are seriously injured.

Wrong-way crashes are one of the more common – and deadly – types of Massachusetts car accidents. Wrong-way crashes often result in head-on collisions, which are known to be among the most dangerous collisions. Head-on collisions rarely result in minor bumps and bruises, and more often cause serious, lifelong injuries. Almost always, head-on collisions are caused by driver error. Below are a few of the most common causes of head-on collisions:

  • Distracted driving
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Driving in an unfamiliar area
  • Drowsy driving

While most wrong-way accidents are the result of driver error, some are due to dangerously designed or maintained roads. For example, the following are potential causes of wrong-way accidents that may not be due to the fault of another motorist:

  • Unmarked or poorly marked on ramps and off ramps
  • A lack of signage or poorly placed signs
  • Poor visibility
  • Dangerously designed roads

Those who have been injured in a Massachusetts wrong-way crash may be entitled to monetary compensation for the injuries they have sustained. Depending on the nature of the accident, a claim may be filed against another driver, their insurance company, or, in some cases, a government entity.

Head-On Collision in Westborough Tragically Kills Two Motorists, Leaving One Passenger Injured

Last month, one woman died as the result of a wrong-way crash that occurred on Interstate 495, near Exit 22, in Westborough. According to a local news report, police received calls of a wrong-way driver heading northbound in the I-495 southbound lanes. A short time later, police received calls reporting a head-on collision.

Upon arrival, police determined that a Volvo was traveling the wrong direction in I-495 when it struck a Chevrolet Trax. The driver of the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Volvo was transported to the hospital, where she later died. The 83-year-old passenger in the Chevrolet was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police have enlisted the assistance of an accident reconstruction team and are in the process of investigating the cause of the fatal collision.
