An initial investigation by the Massachusetts State Police has a Honda Civic on the eastbound side of Route 2, operated by a Framingham woman crossing the median into the westbound lanes and striking a 2007 Ford F250 pickup, driven by a Phillipston man

Framingham Librarian Linda Nelson, 65, was killed in a car crash on Route 2 in Gardner on Monday night, said the Massachusetts State Police.

Massachusetts State Trooper Daniel Schumaker was commuting to the Athol Barracks for his assigned midnight shift, at abut 10:15 p.m., when he came upon a two-car crash on Route 2 west in Gardner, approximately quarter-mile prior to Exit 22 (Route 68), according to a press release from the Massachusetts State Police.

The Trooper’s initial investigation indicated a 2009 Honda Civic on the eastbound side of Route 2, operated by a Framingham woman, 65, crossed the median into the westbound lanes and struck a 2007 Ford F250 pickup, driven by a Phillipston man, 63.

The man sustained minor injuries, as a result of the crash, said police.

The Honda Civic rolled over, and the Gardner Fire Department had to extricate the Framingham woman, according to the state police.

The Framingham woman was taken to Heywood Hospital by Gardner Ambulance, where she died.

Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police collision analysis and reconstruction section, crime scene services section and the Worcester District Attorney’s Office/State Police detective unit are assisting the troopers from the Athol Barracks with their investigation.

Route 2 West remained closed as of midnight Tuesday, with traffic being detoured at Exit 23.
