Suspect Crashes Into Car In Revere, 2 Killed

BOSTON – Police say Sergio Santiago, Jr., 27, was fleeing from police in Chelsea around 1:30 a.m. when he crashed into a car driven by Viktor Ymatov, 65, of Revere.

Two people were killed in a two-car crash on Route 16 in Revere early Saturday morning, and according to police, one of the men involved was trying to escape police.

Police say Sergio Santiago, Jr., 27, was fleeing from police in Chelsea around 1:30 a.m. when he crashed into a car driven by Viktor Ymatov, 65, of Revere.

The pursuit allegedly started after an altercation between Santiago and another driver was reported to police by an unidentified woman, the Suffolk County D.A.’s office said.

Chelsea police chased Santiago on Route 16 east into Revere, but stopped the pursuit because of the high risk involved.

While turning around, police say they came upon a crash that involved Santiago and Yumatov on Route 16 east, near Route 145.

Police say both men were thrown from their cars. Yumatov was pronounced dead at the scene and Santiago was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital in Everett.

A preliminary investigation reveals that Santiago’s car crashed into Yumatov’s car.  The D.A.’s office said Yumatov was an innocent man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Investigators said they could smell alcohol inside Santiago’s car.

The crash shut down Route 16 eastbound for four hours.
